First Blog Post - MUS F200X - Larsen

Hello all,

My name is Soren. I'm a sophomore at UAA studying Aviation Technology with a minor in CS. I've lived in Alaska for the past 8 years and flew for the first time up here. I particularly like World War 2 era planes. I'm taking this class as an elective because I enjoy playing and learning about music. The photo is of northern lights that I saw during a weekend at Chena.



I've been playing music since I was roughly 6 years old. I have played in concerts as well as a band, but currently I mostly only play for my church band. I originally learned the piano, but later taught myself the guitar. After a few years of self teaching, I went to a teacher and learned a lot about guitar and music theory, and I've been interested ever since. I haven't attended a concert in quite some time. The song is from my favorite band, Switchfoot.

    Music theory is so darn useful. Glad you learned about it. Did you hear in that song it started out in E minor and then they switched into a major key using a device called a piccardy third. This is really great band and as I mentioned before, I had never heard of them. Why aren't they better known?

  Test Drive, by John Powell, is a track from the movie How to Train Your Dragon, which has one of my favorite scores. The movie was released in 2010 in the U.S. I really love how the movie, and this piece in particular, tells a story through through the music. Musical Analysis #1 - Where I Belong/Vice Verses - Switchfoot

I have found that the songs that stick with me most are the ones ask or answer a question that I have a hard time putting into words. I have chosen a combination of these two songs, on after each other in their shared album, Vice Verses , because they each accomplish one of these things, and I feel that they belong together. I would recommend listening to Vice Verses (top) first, then Where I Belong (bottom) .   Song Information Both of these songs were written by Jon Foreman, and released in 2011 on the album Vice Verses. Lyrics I chose these two songs because they both contrast each other and deal with the same issues. Vice Verses explores attempting to understand life, with its ups and downs, and looking for purpose from a place of emptiness. Role of the Performer - Pentatonix

Pentatonix is an American group of acapella singers originally founded in 2011. The group has produced some original music, but is known for their covers of pop and Christmas music. Biography: The group was founded in 2011 when former high school classmates Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying decided that they wanted to win "The Sing Off", which was a popular show on NBC at the time, with the prize of $200,000 and a recording deal with Sony. Mitch had auditioned for the show directly out of high school, while Kirstin and Scott were both in college to pursue music. In an effort to make time for the show, though, the both dropped out. Since all three shared the lead vocal duties, they were advised to find a bassist and beatboxer to complete the group.
